Activities

FC.ID/CIÊNCIAS will be the recipients of excellent training on fine research areas of particular importance for the development of MMWI devices which will help them grow and become national and international references in this field of work.

Training schools

Training schools will be focused on three very technical areas, customised theoretical background followed by practical laboratory and/or hands-on sessions in the partners’ state-of-the-art facilities. Additionally, training on clinical trial design and the translation of medical devices from the research bench to the clinical trials will be organised.

The administration staff in FC.ID/CIÊNCIAS-ULISBOA will also be trained on particular topics to improve the pipelines they have in place in their innovation & entrepreneurship programme and and help them scout more potential candidates for their programme.

Planned schools:

  • Summer School on dielectric properties measurements and phantom development, in Galway (WP2) – 2025
  • Workshop on antenna systems for biomedical applications, in Turin (WP3) – 2026
  • Training school on radar algorithms, online (WP4) – 2026
  • Training school on microwave tomography algorithms, online (WP4) – 2027
  • Training school on clinical trial design and management, in Galway (WP5) – 2026
  • Summer school on translation of microwave technology into industry, in Galway (WP5) – 2027
  • Workshop on scouting research projects, in Galway (WP6) – 2026
  • Training school on management of technology transfer, in Lisbon (WP6) – 2026

Missions and mentoring

Several short missions have been carefully planned to follow up each training activity that each partner will provide. This will allow FC.ID to consolidate knowledge and most importantly cooperative research.

Planned missions:

  • Short missions for dielectric property measurements of biological tissues, in Galway (WP2) – 2025/2026
  • Short missions for the development of antennas for medical applications, in Turin (WP3) – 2026
  • Short missions to visit antenna lab, in Lisbon (WP3) – 2026/2027
  • Short missions for development of algorithms, in Galway and Turin (WP4) – 2026/2027
  • Mentoring on scouting research projects, online (WP6) – 2026/2027

Exploratory project

3BAtwin – Bone, Brain, Breast and Axillary Medical Microwave Imaging Twinning

Objective: promote the collaboration between partners towards exploring new methodologies and features of their own Medical Microwave Imaging (MMWI) prototypes for different applications.

Bone: osteoporosis and cancer diagnosis (GALWAY)

Brain: stroke and Alzheimer’s diagnosis (POLITO)

Breast and axillary region: diagnosis (FC.ID/CIÊNCIAS)

International conference

3BAtwin will organise the “International Conference on Medical Microwave Imaging Applications (ICMWIA)” in Lisbon.

Two editions planned: February 2026, February 2027

  • The main topics of the conference will include dielectric characterisation of biological tissues; microwave imaging; tissue mimicking materials; phantom development; antenna development.
  • Invited talks, presentations and posters of peer-reviewed abstracts and conference papers;
  • Workshops in satellite areas of research that are of interest to MMWI research;
  • Abstracts and conference papers will be published in IEEE proceedings.
