Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month

May is the Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month!

The Translational Medical Device Lab (TMD Lab) from University of Galway, one of the beneficiaries of 3BAtwin, has been conducting research towards bone health monitoring using microwave technology.

One in 2 women and one in 4 men (over the age of 50) will fracture a bone due to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is characterised by low bone mass and the deterioration of bone tissue, leading to an increased risk of fracture. Osteoporosis can be prevented by exercising regularly, eating a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Microwave imaging shows great potential for monitoring bone health by detecting dielectric differences between healthy and diseased bone tissues. This technology is safe, potentially real-time, cost-effective, user-friendly, and portable.
